A tempo run is a middle-distance workout, usually lasting somewhere between 15 and 60 minutes, that is performed at a consistent, comfortably hard effort. It is designed to keep runners predominantly in Zone 3, although some may drift briefly into Zone 4 or 5 when really pushing it.

These runs, which always start with a warm-up and end with a cool-down, assist runners in reaching and sustaining speeds that are either very close to, or right at goal race pace, for an extended period of time.
